Compliance at a glance
Which vehicles are ULEZ compliant?
The rules vary by fuel type. These are the headlines, for an authoritative check on a specific reg, use the form above.
Petrol cars
Euro 4 or newer
Typically registered after January 2006
Diesel cars
Euro 6 or newer
Typically registered after September 2015
Hybrid + electric
Usually compliant
All EVs compliant; hybrids registered after 2018 typically pass
Black cabs
LEVC TX always compliant
Purpose-built for ULEZ; older TX4 may need retrofit
For cab + PHV drivers
Non-compliant cab? Generalist buyers lowball it.
A ULEZ-non-compliant vehicle has roughly 80% smaller London buyer pool than a compliant equivalent. Generic online buyers price for the smaller pool and pass the discount onto you. We sell into the continental export market, regional fleets, and trade buyers who don't operate in London, full market value, not London-discounted.
- Pre-2006 petrol cabs: we buy them every day, regional export demand is strong
- Pre-2015 diesel PHVs: typically £1,500 to £3,500 above instant-quote sites quotes
- Older LEVC TX4: retrofit-or-export decision, we'll price both paths
Reality check
The £12.50 / day maths
- Daily ULEZ charge
- £12.50
- Working 5 days / week
- £3,250 / year
- Working 6 days / week
- £3,900 / year
- Average PCN if missed
- £90 to £180
On a non-compliant PCO car running 6 days per week, ULEZ adds roughly £3,900 per year. That figure is usually larger than the annual depreciation difference between holding the non-compliant cab and switching to a compliant alternative.
FAQs
Common questions about London ULEZ
What is the London ULEZ?
The Ultra Low Emission Zone is a TfL scheme that charges drivers of polluting vehicles £12.50 per day to drive within Greater London. Introduced in 2019 in Central London, expanded to the North + South Circular in October 2021, then to all of Greater London in August 2023.
Which cars are ULEZ compliant?
Petrol cars: must meet Euro 4 (typically registered after January 2006). Diesel cars: must meet Euro 6 (typically registered after September 2015). Most hybrids registered after 2018 are compliant. All electric vehicles are compliant. LEVC TX, TX4, and TXE black cabs are purpose-built for ULEZ and always compliant.
How much is the ULEZ daily charge?
£12.50 per calendar day if you drive a non-compliant vehicle within the zone. The charge applies 24 hours a day, every day except Christmas Day. Automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) cameras enforce it; failure to pay results in a £180 Penalty Charge Notice (£90 if paid within 14 days).
How accurate is this checker?
We use official DVLA records (fuel type, year, make, model) and apply the ULEZ rules published by TfL. For 95%+ of common vehicles, the result is reliable. For edge cases, historic vehicles (pre-1973), specialist vehicles, military, MoD-operated, or with retrofitted emissions kits, we recommend the official TfL vehicle checker for an authoritative answer.
I'm a PCO driver, does ULEZ affect me?
Yes. If your private-hire vehicle is non-compliant, you pay £12.50 per day on top of your hire costs, which can wipe out a full day's earnings. Most PCO drivers running pre-2018 diesels or pre-2006 petrols have already switched to hybrids or LEVC TX. If you're still on a non-compliant vehicle, the maths usually points to exiting.
Is there a scrappage scheme for non-compliant vehicles?
TfL closed the main ULEZ scrappage scheme in late 2024. A specialist sale to a buyer who knows the export market or commercial routes typically pays more than scrappage did, that's what we do at SellYourCab.co.uk. A 2-hour offer takes 60 seconds to request.
Will my reg be saved or shared?
We log the lookup to a per-IP rate-limit table to prevent scraping; the entry expires after 60 seconds. No personal data is captured unless you submit the Get Offer CTA at the bottom of the result. DVLA logs are governed by the DVLA.
Does it work for vans and motorbikes?
Yes. Vans: petrol Euro 4, diesel Euro 6. Motorbikes: Euro 3 (typically registered after July 2007). The checker handles all four vehicle categories from a single reg lookup.
Where is the ULEZ?
All of Greater London, up to (but not including) the M25. The boundary signage is along all major routes into London. The Congestion Charge zone in Central London is separate and additional, non-compliant vehicles in the Congestion Charge zone pay £15 Congestion Charge plus £12.50 ULEZ daily.
What if my cab fails the check?
Two practical options: (1) Switch to a compliant vehicle (hybrid Prius, LEVC TX, or any electric). (2) Sell the non-compliant cab to a specialist buyer who knows the export and regional-fleet markets. Generalist buyers like generic online buyers lose 80% of the London buyer pool on non-compliant vehicles, so they lowball. We don't.
The compliance rules summarised here are based on the ULEZ standards published by Transport for London. For an authoritative per-reg check use the TfL vehicle checker.
