Gen 2 (XW20, 2003-2009)
The first widely-adopted private hire Prius. NiMH battery, 1.5L petrol hybrid drivetrain. Euro 4 so non-ULEZ-compliant in central London, but strong continental-export demand keeps prices honest.
Typical condition: 180,000-280,000 miles. Private-hire-active examples increasingly rare.
Gen 3 (XW30, 2009-2015)
The private hire workhorse. 1.8L petrol hybrid, NiMH (or rare Li-ion on PHV-spec), Euro 5 then Euro 6 from 2013. Best-balanced economy + reliability of the four generations. The Gen 3 hybrid battery is famously durable in cab service.
Typical condition: 150,000-240,000 miles. Private-hire-active stock still strong.
Gen 4 (XW50, 2015-2022)
Lithium-ion battery option (still NiMH on most non-PHV Gen 4), redesigned chassis, Euro 6. ULEZ-compliant from day one. Plug-in hybrid (PHV) variant with 30-mile EV-only range arrived 2017, priced as a separate trim because of running-cost economics.
Typical condition: 100,000-200,000 miles. Most active private hire stock today.
Gen 5 (XW60, 2023+)
The current Prius, only available as a plug-in hybrid in the UK, no straight hybrid trim. Larger battery, redesigned cabin, premium positioning. Limited private hire uptake so far because of higher entry price; resale strong because of scarcity in the licensed-trade market.
Typical condition: under 50,000 miles. New-to-private-hire stock.
