Selling for an estate

Selling a car after someone has died. There is no rush.

For executors and family. We work to your timescale. A real person values the vehicle, we collect it free, and we handle the DVLA paperwork.

No rush

We work to your timescale.

There is a lot to deal with after a death, and the car is rarely the first thing. We will not chase you. Get in touch when it suits you, ask any questions first, and decide in your own time.

If you are not sure you are the right person to sell, or what the estate needs before a sale, check with the solicitor handling the estate. This page is general information, not legal advice.

What to have ready

The paperwork that helps.

The V5C logbook, if you have it

If it cannot be found, tell us. A missing logbook does not have to stop the sale, and we will explain the options.

The death certificate

Have it to hand. We will tell you exactly what we need to see.

Grant of probate or letters of administration

Only if it has already been issued. If it has not, tell us where things stand.

ID for the person selling

Photo ID, such as a driving licence or passport, for whoever is selling on behalf of the estate.

Any finance details

If the vehicle was on finance, the lender's name and the agreement number, or a settlement letter if you have one.

Do not have everything yet? Tell us what you have and we will say what is still needed. If you are unsure, check with the solicitor handling the estate.

How it works

Four steps, at your pace.

1. Send the reg when you are ready

Reg and mileage is all we need to start. A real person looks at it, not a computer, and there is no obligation to sell.

2. A firm offer, no pressure

The offer holds for at least 72 hours. If you need longer, say so and we will look at it again when you are ready.

3. Collection at a time that suits

Free collection anywhere in the UK, or drop it at our Bethnal Green HQ. We call ahead before we collect.

4. Paid in full, paperwork handled

Paid in full by bank transfer before your vehicle leaves, to the account the executor names. We handle the DVLA paperwork.

Payment and finance

Paid in full, to the executor's account.

Paid in full by bank transfer before your vehicle leaves, to the account the executor names. There are no fees. The price holds if the vehicle is as described. Any change is explained first, and you can say no.

If the vehicle was on finance, outstanding finance is settled with the lender as part of the sale, and the balance goes to the executor's account. We handle the DVLA paperwork. More on how finance works is on our finance settlement page, and the full process is on how to sell.

Common questions

Selling from an estate: FAQs.

Is there a deadline to sell?+

Not from us. We work to your timescale. Get in touch when you are ready, and take as long as you need to decide.

Who receives the money?+

Paid in full by bank transfer before your vehicle leaves, to the account the executor names. If there is finance on the vehicle, the lender is paid first and the balance goes to that account.

The vehicle still has finance on it. What happens?+

Outstanding finance is settled with the lender as part of the sale. Send us the lender's details and we take it from there.

Can we sell before probate is granted?+

It depends on the estate and the paperwork in place. Tell us what you have and we will explain what we need. If you are unsure, check with the solicitor handling the estate.

Can the price change at collection?+

The price holds if the vehicle is as described. Any change is explained first, and you can say no.
