The BMW models we buy
What we look for in each model.
The honest detail. Mileage ranges we see in our pipeline, common faults at the high end of that range, and how each spec affects the offer.
3 Series (G20 + G21 Touring)
50,000 to 170,000 miles
Volume PHV saloon. 320d M Sport is the most common spec we see, 30 to 50 per quarter. The 330e plug-in hybrid is gaining share fast in central London chauffeur work because of ULEZ status. Touring (G21 estate) sells £400 to £700 above the saloon body because of airport-run demand. The M Sport trim adds £600 to £1,000 over SE.
Common at the high end
Timing chain rattle on early B47 diesels past 130k (preventative chain + tensioner £900 to £1,300)
AdBlue heater failure on 2019 to 2021 cars (recall covered most, check VIN against BMW recall lookup)
Run-flat tyre sidewall damage from London speed bumps, more frequent than you'd expect
5 Series (G30 Saloon)
60,000 to 180,000 miles
Executive PHV staple, especially the 530e plug-in hybrid. We see 20 to 30 per quarter. The 540i petrol and M550d are niche but command a premium with corporate chauffeur clients. Adaptive suspension on M Sport trim is a real plus for the trade buyer pool because of comfort over central London speed bumps.
Common at the high end
AdBlue tank heater on 520d (covered by recall on most VINs from 2018 to 2021)
Air suspension on M Sport adaptive at 140k+ (£1,200 to £1,800 fix at a specialist)
iDrive 7 freezing on early G30 facelift (software update usually clears it)
X5 (G05)
40,000 to 130,000 miles
Heathrow-run and family-chauffeur favourite. xDrive30d is the volume model, the xDrive45e plug-in hybrid is the highest-margin spec for ULEZ-compliant chauffeur work. We pay close to retail-trade for clean 2020 to 2022 stock with the Tech Pack and Comfort Pack. M Sport trim is preferred over SE for resale.
Adaptive headlight control unit at 100k+ (Laser headlight option is £1,200 part)
Centre console wear on left-hand-drive imports from Europe (not common on UK-supplied cars)
What affects your BMW offer
Honest factors. Not all of them are obvious.
BMW main-dealer service
BMW UK main-dealer history (Sytner, Cooper, Stratstone, Williams, etc.) adds £800 to £1,500 over independent service. Even better is a Service Inclusive (BMW Service Inclusive Plus or Service Inclusive Basic) plan with remaining time, which transfers with the vehicle and adds £500 to £1,000 because the next operator gets services at the agreed BMW rate.
M Sport vs SE trim
M Sport adds £600 to £1,000 over SE on 3 Series and 5 Series in the trade market. The M Sport Plus pack (harman kardon, head-up display, comfort access) is worth another £300 to £500. M Sport Pro on G20 / G21 is becoming a real positive because of the laser lights and Adaptive M Suspension.
Plug-in hybrid (330e / 530e / xDrive45e) premium
Plug-in 330e and 530e command £1,500 to £2,500 over the equivalent diesel right now. ULEZ Zone B expansion has accelerated the shift, the 17 kWh battery on 530e gives 30+ miles of EV-only range which keeps the car fully compliant for central London chauffeur work. We check pack health at collection using BMW ISTA.
Run-flat tyre condition
BMW run-flat tyres have shorter lives than conventional tyres, especially on Adaptive M Suspension cars. A full set of mid-life Bridgestone Driveguard or Continental ContiSeal run-flats adds £200 to £400 to our offer because the next operator doesn't need to replace them immediately. Run-flat sidewall damage from speed bumps is the most common discount we apply.
iDrive 7 / iDrive 8 version
Cars with iDrive 8 (G20 LCI facelift from MY2022) command £400 to £800 over pre-facelift because of the wireless CarPlay / Android Auto and over-the-air updates. iDrive 7 cars are still solid, but the iDrive 8 cars resell faster.
BMW market, today
Where BMW prices are right now.
BMW intake is steady. 330e plug-in hybrid is the breakout product: clean 2021 to 2022 cars trade £24,000 to £30,000 in our network. The G30 530e is similar at £28,000 to £36,000 for clean stock with M Sport and adaptive suspension. X5 xDrive45e is the highest-margin item we buy, £52,000 to £62,000 for clean 2021 to 2022 stock with Tech Pack and Comfort Pack. Pure-diesel 320d / 520d softened in the last quarter as the ULEZ Zone B effective date firmed up.
BMW FAQ
Common questions.
I have a 3 Series 330e plug-in hybrid. How does the offer compare to a 320d diesel?
Premium of £1,500 to £2,500 in clean condition. The 330e battery (12 kWh on G20) has plenty of remaining life because of how lightly most chauffeur drivers use the EV-only mode. We check pack capacity with BMW ISTA at collection; a clean health report is worth real money to the trade buyer.
My 5 Series is on BMW Service Inclusive. Can I transfer it?
Yes. BMW Service Inclusive plans (Basic, Plus, Total Care) transfer with the vehicle so long as the cost is paid up. We handle the paperwork. The plan adds £500 to £1,000 to our offer because the next operator gets services at the agreed BMW rate rather than retail.
Does the M Sport trim really make a difference on a 5 Series?
Yes, around £600 to £1,000 in the trade market. M Sport Plus adds another £300 to £500. The Adaptive M Suspension option is the single highest-value tick-box on a G30 5 Series because chauffeur passengers feel the difference over London speed bumps.
Is the X5 xDrive45e really worth £2,500 more than the xDrive30d?
In the right market, yes. ULEZ Zone B expansion means the xDrive45e holds onto its central London PHV utility while the xDrive30d is increasingly priced for the regional chauffeur market. The 24 kWh battery gives 30+ miles of EV-only range, which keeps the car compliant for chauffeur work that includes congestion-zone pickups.
