The Hyundai models we buy
What we look for in each model.
The honest detail. Mileage ranges we see in our pipeline, common faults at the high end of that range, and how each spec affects the offer.
Ioniq Hybrid (HEV)
80,000 to 220,000 miles
The volume PHV that quietly displaced the Prius for many London operators between 2018 and 2022. Cleaner exterior, more passenger room than a Prius, similar economy. We see 30 to 50 per quarter, mostly 2018 to 2021 stock. The Premium SE trim adds £400 to £600 over SE because of the heated seats and adaptive cruise.
Common at the high end
12V auxiliary battery wear at 60k to 80k miles (cheap £120 fix but causes intermittent no-start)
Front brake disc warping on heavy stop-start patterns (Hankook OE brake life is shorter than aftermarket alternatives)
Infotainment freezing on 8-inch unit cars (firmware update usually clears it)
Ioniq Plug-in (PHEV)
40,000 to 160,000 miles
The sleeper hit. 8.9 kWh pack, 39 miles EV-only range, ULEZ-clean. Chauffeur operators in central London are still discovering it. We pay roughly £1,200 to £2,000 over the HEV equivalent in clean condition because the supply is thin and demand is firm.
Common at the high end
Charging port flap mechanism on 2017 to 2019 cars (cosmetic, £80 part)
PHEV-specific 12V battery wear, independent of high-voltage pack
OBC (on-board charger) software glitch on early 2018 cars (covered by recall, check VIN)
Tucson Hybrid (NX4)
20,000 to 80,000 miles
The current-shape Tucson Hybrid (2021 onwards) is the family-chauffeur SUV picking up where the diesel Qashqai left off. We buy 10 to 20 per quarter, mostly Premium and Ultimate trim. The 1.6 T-GDi hybrid powertrain shares a lot with the Kia Sportage Hybrid which keeps parts costs reasonable for the next operator.
Common at the high end
Rear washer pipe routing leaks at high mileage (£40 fix at an independent)
Front fog light condensation on early 2021 cars (covered by warranty if still in coverage)
Infotainment touchscreen sensitivity drift at 60k+ (firmware update usually clears it)
What affects your Hyundai offer
Honest factors. Not all of them are obvious.
Hyundai main-dealer service stamps
Hyundai main-dealer service history (Bristol Street, RRG, Allen, etc.) adds £400 to £800 over independent service. Hyundai Promise and Hyundai Sense service plans transfer with the vehicle which adds £300 to £500 because the next operator gets remaining services at the agreed Hyundai rate.
5-year Hyundai warranty remaining
Hyundai's 5-year unlimited mileage warranty is the highest-leverage factor on a clean low-to-mid-mileage Ioniq or Tucson. Remaining warranty (especially 2 years+ left) adds £600 to £1,200 to our offer because the next operator gets continuing manufacturer cover. The warranty transfers automatically with the V5 change.
Hybrid battery health (HV pack)
We check pack capacity at collection using OBD2 hybrid diagnostic. Hyundai HEV batteries are well-engineered and we routinely buy Ioniq with 200k+ miles where the original pack is still healthy. A documented Hyundai dealer battery replacement within the last 30k adds £400 to £700; non-dealer refurbs are treated as neutral.
Plug-in (PHEV) vs HEV
Ioniq Plug-in commands £1,200 to £2,000 over the HEV equivalent in clean condition. The PHEV-specific 8.9 kWh pack wears a bit faster than the standard HEV pack so we check capacity carefully, but ULEZ-compliant EV-only range makes the PHEV more valuable to central London chauffeur operators.
Both keys + charging cable
Missing the spare key knocks £100 to £200 off a Hyundai offer (key cut + program is £220 at most dealers). For the Ioniq Plug-in, the granny charger (3-pin domestic cable) is part of the original delivery; missing it knocks another £80 to £120 because the next operator has to replace it.
Hyundai market, today
Where Hyundai prices are right now.
Hyundai Ioniq has matured into a Prius-tier mainstream PHV. Ioniq HEV at 2019 to 2021 trades £8,500 to £12,500 in our network for clean stock with full service. Ioniq Plug-in (PHEV) is firmer at £10,500 to £14,500 because supply is thin. Tucson Hybrid trades £21,000 to £28,000 for clean 2022 to 2023 stock with Premium or Ultimate trim. The brand reads strong with chauffeur operators who used to default to Toyota; we tend to place clean Ioniqs faster than equivalent Auris or older Corolla Hybrid stock.
Hyundai FAQ
Common questions.
Does my Ioniq battery condition really matter, or is it all about mileage?
Battery condition matters more than mileage for hybrid cars. We check pack capacity at collection using a hybrid diagnostic. Ioniq HEV batteries hold up well, we routinely buy 200k+ examples where the original pack is healthy. The mileage matters for the gearbox, suspension, and the rest of the car, not the hybrid system itself.
I have an Ioniq Plug-in. Is it worth selling now that the EV range feels limited?
Yes. The 39-mile EV-only range is still enough for most ULEZ-compliant central London chauffeur use, and demand is firm because the supply of clean Ioniq PHEVs is thin. We typically pay £1,200 to £2,000 over the HEV equivalent and place the car within 10 to 14 days.
My Tucson Hybrid is still under the 5-year warranty. Does that lift the offer?
Yes, significantly. Remaining 2-year+ warranty adds £600 to £1,200 to our offer because the next operator gets continuing Hyundai manufacturer cover. The warranty transfers automatically with the V5; you don't need to do anything to make it portable.
Are non-Hyundai service stamps a problem on an Ioniq?
Not a problem, but Hyundai main-dealer stamps add £400 to £800 over independent service. The key thing is consistency, a full and consistent independent service record at a hybrid specialist is worth more than a patchy main-dealer history. We check digital service records where available.
