MG's electric range has become the entry point for new ULEZ-compliant PHV drivers. We buy MG ZS EV, MG 5 EV, MG4 EV, and the older HS Plug-in. Strong demand, we usually beat franchise trade-in offers by 10 to 15%.

The MG models we buy
What we look for in each model.
The honest detail. Mileage ranges we see in our pipeline, common faults at the high end of that range, and how each spec affects the offer.
MG ZS EV (Mk1 + Mk2)
20,000 to 100,000 miles
The volume entry-EV that opened the door to thousands of new PHV drivers. Mk1 (2019 to 2021) had a 44.5 kWh pack, real-world 150 miles. Mk2 facelift (2022 onwards) has the 51 kWh standard or 72.6 kWh long-range, real-world 220 to 280 miles. We see 20 to 35 ZS EV per quarter, mostly Trophy and Trophy Connect trim.
Charging port flap mechanism on Mk1 cars (cosmetic, £80 part)
Infotainment touchscreen sensitivity drift at 60k+ (MG dealer software refresh)
MG 5 EV (Mk1 + Mk2)
15,000 to 80,000 miles
The estate-shape EV that no other manufacturer makes at this price. Mk1 (2020 to 2022) had 52.5 kWh, real-world 180 miles. Mk2 (2023 onwards) has 61.1 kWh long-range. Popular with airport-runner drivers who need real boot capacity at the entry-EV price point. We see 10 to 18 per quarter.
Common at the high end
Rear washer pipe routing leaks at high mileage (£40 fix at an independent)
Front wiper park position drift on early 2021 cars (firmware refresh from MG dealer)
Rear air-con vent fan noise at 50k+ (£150 part + fit)
MG4 EV (XPower, Long Range, Trophy)
10,000 to 60,000 miles
The MG4 launched in late 2022 with a properly competitive 51 kWh or 64 kWh pack and 150 kW DC fast charging. Real-world 200 to 270 miles. The Trophy trim with heat pump is the highest-margin spec we buy. XPower (450 PS dual-motor) is rare in PHV use but commands a £2,000 to £3,000 premium.
Common at the high end
12V auxiliary battery wear independent of main pack
Heat pump duct rattle at 30k+ on Trophy trim (£100 part + fit)
Charging port flap mechanism (cosmetic, £80)
What affects your MG offer
Honest factors. Not all of them are obvious.
MG 7-year warranty remaining
MG's 7-year / 80,000-mile warranty is the highest-leverage factor on a clean MG EV. Remaining warranty (especially 3 years+ left) adds £600 to £1,200 to our offer because the next operator gets continuing manufacturer cover. The warranty transfers automatically with the V5; no paperwork needed.
Battery pack health
We check pack capacity at collection using OBD2 EV diagnostic. MG batteries hold up well; we routinely buy ZS EV Mk1 at 80k+ miles where the original pack is still within 85% of original capacity. The 72.6 kWh long-range pack on Mk2 ZS EV is particularly robust. Documented MG dealer battery health checks within the last 12 months add £300 to £600.
Long-range pack premium
Long-range battery variants (72.6 kWh on ZS EV Mk2, 64 kWh on MG4 Trophy) command £1,500 to £2,500 over the standard pack in our network. The buyer pool of new PHV drivers entering the market actively filters for long-range stock because of charging anxiety on the trade-in route, so the premium is real.
Trim level and heat pump
Trophy trim adds £400 to £800 over SE / Excite on ZS EV and MG4. The heat pump option (standard on MG4 Trophy, optional on MG4 Long Range) adds another £200 to £400 because winter range loss is significantly reduced. The Trophy Connect spec on ZS EV with full leather adds £500 to £700 over standard Trophy.
Both keys + charging cables
Missing the spare key knocks £100 to £200 off an MG offer (key cut + program is £180 at most MG dealers). The granny charger (3-pin domestic) and Type 2 charging cable are part of the original delivery; missing them knocks another £100 to £200 because the next operator has to replace them at £150 to £250 retail.
MG market, today
Where MG prices are right now.
MG is the EV value-tier breakout in the PHV market. ZS EV Mk1 (2019 to 2021) trades £10,500 to £15,000 for clean stock with full service. ZS EV Mk2 long-range (2022 to 2023) is firmer at £18,000 to £24,000. MG4 Trophy Long Range trades £19,000 to £26,000 for clean 2023 to 2024 stock with the heat pump. We place clean MG stock within 7 to 14 days because of the strong new-PHV-driver buyer pool entering the market.
MG FAQ
Common questions.
I'm a new PHV driver, will I get a competitive offer on my MG ZS EV?
Yes. MG EVs trade strongly in our network because the buyer pool of new ULEZ-driven PHV drivers entering the market actively seeks ZS EV and MG4 stock at the entry-EV price point. We typically pay 10 to 15% above franchise dealer trade-in offers because we don't apply the generalist trade-in margin. The offer reflects what the trade buyer pool will pay, not what a franchise dealer wants to make.
My MG is still under the 7-year warranty. Does that matter?
Significantly. Remaining 3-year+ warranty adds £600 to £1,200 to our offer because the next operator gets continuing MG manufacturer cover, particularly important on the battery and motor where out-of-warranty costs run high. The warranty transfers automatically with the V5 change; you don't need to do anything to make it portable.
How does the MG4 compare to a ZS EV for resale?
MG4 trades higher than ZS EV for equivalent age and mileage because the platform is fundamentally newer (built for EV from the ground up), 150 kW DC charging is meaningfully faster than the ZS EV's 76 kW, and the chassis feels more like a proper European EV. A clean MG4 Trophy Long Range at 30k trades roughly £2,000 to £3,500 above a clean ZS EV Trophy Long Range at the same mileage.
Does my MG count as ULEZ-compliant for TfL PHV licensing?
Yes. All MG EVs are zero-emission and qualify out of the box for TfL ULEZ-compliant PHV licensing. The licensing fee discount for zero-emission vehicles is a real running-cost saver; chauffeur operators factor that into the resale price they pay for clean MG stock.
